I take a lot of notes. Stacks of notebooks line my bookshelves. There is so much gold in plain and simple everyday conversations – I can’t help but jot it down. Writing notes helps me remember what I’m hearing. The way I figure it, the more ways you can cram stuff into your brain, the better you’ll retain it. But that’s not the only reason I write so much. I also like to review my notes to gobble up those nuggets of wisdom one more time. Last week I was going through notes I took from a mastermind I was at three years ago. One of our members shared about a rough patch he was going through. Because of the confidentiality agreement, I can’t tell you who it was or give you specifics about the situation, but he had set a fairly ambitious goal. The problem was all of the obstacles in his way were knocking him down pretty hard. We’ve all been there. Life and business hitting you with a bunch of jabs only to try to take you down for the count with a big right upper hook. One of the other members in our group shared a quote from the immortal motivational speaker Les Brown… If life knocks you down, try to land on your back. Because if you can look up, you can get up. And if you get up, you can stand up. And if you stand up, you can fight for your dream once again. These quotes are great, but they don’t mean anything if you don’t act upon them. Over the years I had lost touch with this particular individual and was curious if he had gotten back up to fight. So I give him a call this weekend to reconnect. He told me that he did indeed get himself back up to fight. In fact, that quote has allowed him to grow way beyond what he thought was possible both professionally and personally. The market shift has taken its toll on a lot of people in real estate. If you find yourself in a rough patch and feel like you just can’t go on, remember Les Brown. We’re all gonna take our lumps. Everybody gets knocked down every now and then. And it usually happens when you least expect it. Just make sure you land on your back. Fight for that dream.
