Prohibition at the World Cup

The world’s biggest sports tournament started yesterday. If you’re not a soccer fan, the World Cup tournament happens once every 4 years.

The last tournament took place in Russia in 2018. This year’s tournament is taking place in the middle eastern country of Qatar.

The biggest news to come out of the tournament’s start yesterday wasn’t about the host country losing the opening match. It was that the Qatar government decided just hours before the game began that there would be no alcohol sold during any of the games.

This all left Budweiser, one of the game’s biggest sponsors and the sole provider of alcohol at the tournament, in a precarious position. They now have mountains of beer sitting in warehouses in countries that generally don’t drink alcohol.

Rather than going home with their tail between their legs, they decided to turn the situation into a viral marketing experiment. They announced yesterday that the winning country will not only take home the world cup, they will also get all the beer!

Now I’m sure there are going to be lawsuits filed between FIFA and Budweiser for breach of contract, but it’s cool to see creative thinking in action.

Life is funny – things don’t always go the way we plan. This is especially true in real estate. But there’s always a way to turn a negative into a positive. Will Budweiser come out of this with huge profits? Maybe, maybe not. But they didn’t just sit there licking their wounds. They took action to turn lemons into lemonade.

But this kind of positive, forward thinking doesn’t happen by accident. It requires you to set aside your emotions and look for an angle that can shift the situation to benefit you.

And if you can’t find the silver lining yourself, enlist the help of others. A good chunk of my time coaching is spent helping investors, brokers, and agents navigate difficult situations. I love solving problems that require creative thinking.

The next time you find yourself in a tough spot, remember that all is not lost – put on your creative thinking cap and get to work!

To your success,
